Out and about during the end of the old year and the first days of 2013, the Block Island Times eavesdrops as islanders and visitors alike reflect on what they wish for the New Year:

Cindy Lemon is thinking about one thing as she chats with Dennis McCarthy: “I just want peace,” she says, adding, “Enough of shootings and violence. I want peace! I just want people to be kind to each other and compassionate.”

While nodding in agreement, McCarthy is thinking about something a little closer to home: “I’m wishing for a Thai food restaurant on the island.”

Barbara MacMullan’s thoughts take her simultaneously to concerns that affect us on “a global, national and local level.” To respond to those needs effectively, she’s hoping “that our leaders can work together!”

For Sam Clarke, who immediately thinks about her children and grandchildren, her wish is quite fundamental: “I just want all my family to stay well!”

Jean Kittridge wants “lower taxes,” while George Mellor is hoping for “a world at peace and for the United States Congress to gain some sanity!”

Visiting their grandparents in the waning days of 2012, Dvora and Ruby Redlich have definite wishes for 2013: Dvora says, “I hope that Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund will help people in Long Island and other places affected by the hurricane.” Her sister’s wish is simple though emphatic: “I hope we have snow!”
