Verizon Asks That We Report Telecommunications Problems

By Block Island Residents Association | Feb 24, 2014

If you are experiencing any phone or Internet problems, Verizon asks that you put in a trouble report.  Assuming that repairs elsewhere will eventually get to your location will simply mean that your needs may go unmet.  BIRA's Telecommunications Committee, in cooperation with the Block Island Chamber of Commerce's Telecommunications Committee, are lobbying for us to secure improvements in our island circumstances.  In the meantime, there are two Verizon technicians assigned to the island who are fixing pressing matters.  Sometimes it's as easy as replacing a copper pair near your home.  They are also investigating how to extend the signal to more remote parts of BI.  One experiment you can do to see if your Internet speed is up to snuff is to go online to and to follow instructions for testing your computer's speed.  We're told that 1.0-1.5 is about the best we can expect at this point in time.  If your speed is below that, please report the problem to Verizon! Thanks!
