Two important town meetings next week
The annual Town Financial Meeting will be held this Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. The proposed municipal budget is $12,141,327. Voters will also be asked to act on, among other matters, a $1 million bond for the Sewer Department equipment upgrades and $1 million for the Block Island Housing Board to construct affordable housing.
The second meeting is on the Deepwater Wind project.
If Block Islanders agree on anything, it’s that utility rates are too high and that our source of electricity is fragile. The ramifications of these circumstances are evident — from the cost of the monthly utility bill to the rumbling blackouts and brownouts.
Where islanders disagree is how to solve that problem. There is a great deal of passion on both sides. That is why it is fundamentally important for anyone and everyone to attend the hearing that will be held next Wednesday, May 8, at Town Hall, which is sponsored by the Department of Environmental Management. The hearing will take place from 5 to 8 p.m.
