Twin Maples fishing report: Warming up

In the beginning of every season, fishermen always pay close attention to the water temperature. Typically, you can get a good idea of what fish — and more importantly — what bait will start to show up as the temperature rises. Last week I reported temps in the low 50s, and in just seven days we’re already up to about 55 degrees.

This is why I was not very surprised, yet very excited to hear, that squid is being caught in the Great Salt Pond. Squid fishing is always better in warmer waters. The reason this is so crucial to fishing on Block Island is that during the summer months, squid becomes the predominant food source for several species of fish.

As for reports in the last week, we’re seeing good numbers of fluke being caught by boat from the southwest corner of the island to the mouth of the Coast Guard Channel. Squid and clams are the preferred bait for fluke but you can also try bucktails if you like artificial. People are starting to see a few more fluke being caught from the beach, as well, using the same bait. Mostly Coast Guard Beach and Charleston Beach are where they’re catching them, but that is also because those are two of the easier spots to fish bait without losing your gear in the rocks.

Stripers have been caught all over the west side, including the Great Salt Pond, using an assortment of baits and lures, as well as at different times of the day. Generally, striper fishing starts to pick up at dusk and continues on through first light. In the next week or so, you’re going to start seeing fishermen start using eels as the temps rise and more fish start to be caught. I haven’t seen any huge bass pulled up yet, but the season is young and there is plenty of time!
