Turkey Trot raises funds for the SolvikenSign up for this year's race now
The annual 5K Turkey Trot is more than just an opportunity to get a little exercise. For the past couple of years, race organizer Megan Hennessy has wanted to raise funds for Solviken Solution, which is looking into ways to utilize the now-razed Solviken property off Corn Neck Road.
To that end, Hennessy and Kathy Szabo of the Block Island Chamber of Commerce recently presented a check for $5,000 — representing two years worth of funds raised from the Turkey Trot — over to Justin Lewis of the Block Island Conservancy.
“This is a great time to have the Solviken on the radar,” said Lewis. “The property was purchased [by the Conservancy] last year and there are a number of ideas going around, so we’re very thankful.”
Hennessy said the Turkey Trot will happen this year on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. The race runs from State Beach to Mansion Road. “If you want a t-shirt you need to pre-register,” said Hennessey. “They’re a hot commodity. You can register now on the chamber website.”
“We are raising funds, but not sure what they will go to this year,” said Hennessy. Hennessy said she started the race in 2005 in memory of and in tribute to Michael Coords, a member of the Hennessy family.
