Island residents are urged to participate in a forum to discuss the issue of substance abuse on the island. The forum will take place Tuesday night, May 28, 7:00 at the Block Island School cafeteria. There will be several presenters, followed by a time of questions and answers and open discussion of ways to move forward.
An ad-hoc group met at my invitation to discuss substance abuse issues. This group included representatives of the Prevention Task Force, the Mental Health Task Force, police, school, medical center, clergy, and a few others. Now we are broadening the conversation to include everyone.
Presenters on Tuesday night will include:
- Chief Vin Carlone, on risk factors and the present state of drug trafficking
- Erica Tonner, sharing the story of losing her daughter Rachel to substance abuse
- Sue Littlefield on parenting training and learning to set limits for adult children
- Jill Seppa on the work of the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Task Force
We have some action plans that we are already working on, but we look forward to other great ideas that you may have which can be carried forward by the Prevention Task Force---which will, by the way, need additional members and volunteer helpers.
Please join us at the school for the forum on Tuesday night.
