Theologian Jim Wallis to preach at Harbor Church
Every summer Jim Wallis leaves his life in Washington and heads to Block Island with his wife and two boys. The CEO of Sojourners and one of the nation’s foremost “public theologians,” Jim’s ties to the island go back to his friendship as a young man with William Stringfellow, onetime First Warden, attorney, and lay theologian who was a mentor.
Every summer for several years now, the public has a chance to hear Jim Wallis speak on current issues and religious values. He will be preaching the 10 a.m. worship service at Harbor Church on Sunday, Aug. 11. The service will be followed at 11 a.m. by a reception and book-signing sponsored by Island Bound Bookstore.
Wallis is the author of 10 books. His latest, which he will be signing, is “On God’s Side: What Religion Forgets and Politics Hasn’t Learned about Serving the Common Good.” Wallis’ columns appear in the Times, the Washington Post, and the Boston Globe. He appears with some regularity on Morning Joe, CNN, the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the O’Reilly Factor, and National Public Radio. He started Sojourners as a small Christian magazine and community while he was in divinity school in the 1970s. Now it has grown into a publication with a quarter million readers and a nationwide network.
Jim will be visiting with his wife Joy, one of the first women ordained as an Anglican priest and the model for the TV show “The Vicar of Dibley”. They have two boys, Luke and Jack, whom Jim coaches in Little League baseball.
Wallis and his family will be staying at the Berrigan Cottage on Block Island, where he and others come to write.
Steve Hollaway is the Pastor at Harbor Church.
