The first shoulder season is upon us once again on Block Island; the lines at the grocery store are getting longer, the temperatures are rising, the peepers are peeping, the sun is setting later and the shad is budding.

What better way to see the shad bloom on Block Island than by running in the Annual Shad Bloom 10K Trail Run? This is a course designed to bring you into the heart of the shad foliage. The 2013 Shad Bloom Run takes place on May 11, starting at the Block Island School at 1 p.m.

This 6.2-mile semi-challenging course brings you down Payne Road to Mohegan Trail to Black Rock Road and then out to the trails along the south side of the island where one can take in the breathtaking views leading into Rodman’s Hollow. The course then brings you through Peckham Farm to Fresh Pond and the Gaffney Trail, finishing at the School. Sounds confusing, but the course is well marked allowing for an easy, relaxing run.

Registration is $25. You may register for this race at www.active.com or simply download an application at the Town of New Shoreham’s web page at www.
new-shoreham.com. Applications are also available at the Recreation Office at the Town Hall. Contact the Recreation Dept. at 466-3223 for more information.

Volunteers are needed.
