The Best Time of Year... the Fall Run

September is considered the 'best time of year' by many people for many reasons.  Great weather, the beaches aren't crowded, everything is still open... it also marks the beginning of what known in fishing circles as the 'Fall Run'.  Block Island has a legendary history for striped bass runs from September through November.  As these majestic fish make there way to the Hudson and Delaware Rivers and Chesapeake Bay, Block Island is directly in the migratory path.  Provided there is a food source for them here, this can make for an absolutely epic fall.  The dedicated shore anglers usually begin there hardcore nightly trips this month and extend into late November.  Fishless nights won't be uncommon - but the nights you hit it right are simply epic.  Surf casters generally use a needlefish plug - and carry a variety of colors with them.  Danny's, tins, and bucktails are some other lures of choice, but the needlefish has reigned supreme annually.

Fly Fishermen generally look forward to the fall run of False Albacore and Bonito.  Up until a few years ago Block Island has had really good numbers of fish, which have dwindled making for a quick trio by boat to the R.I South shores and Montauk to hook up with one of these speed demons.  The Coast Guard Channel and North Light are the best spots to target these fish from shore however.\

Block Island Fishworks open daily until Columbus Day.  Stop in for the latest report and whats working.
