Federal lands now open for hunting
Dec 26, 2012

Next month, the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex will for the first time allow hunting on federal conservation lands on Block Island.

Hunting will be allowed on the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge on Sandy Point and Beane Point by special permit only from January 21 to February 28, excluding weekends.

"We are thrilled to finally be able to provide deer hunting opportunities on refuge owned lands on the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge," said Deputy Refuge Manager Juancarlos Giese, "especially with this being the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR), which is administered by the service and is one of the most significant and successful approaches to fish and wildlife conservation in U.S. history.”

During scheduled hunt days, the refuge will be closed to non-hunting visitors to ensure visitor safety.

Other huntable lands are not closed to walkers during hunting days. But don't forget to wear orange when you're out walking on hunting days. It's required for hunters themselves, and for anyone on state land — but it's a good idea for everyone.

Although it's a new development on Block Island, hunting on federal lands is not uncommon. More than 300 national refuges provide hunting opportunities to visitors. All national wildlife refuges in the state are open to fishing, and goose and dove hunting is also allowed on a portion of the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge in South Kingstown.

Hunters seeking the special permits are available at www.rhodeislandpermits.com. For further information and questions, contact the refuge headquarters at 401-364-9124 x42 or visit the website at www.fws.gov/blockisland.

Deer hunting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
