Shellfish Commission resists golden license changes

By Stephanie Turaj | Apr 30, 2013

A proposal by the Town Council to either eliminate golden shellfishing licenses, which are given to applicants age 65 and older, or to increase the cost from $1 to $20, was met with some resistance by the Shellfish Commission.

“Either option is going to create a lot of complaining, excessive complaining, to the clerk’s office,” said Harbors Clerk Beth Rousseau.

However, Rousseau recommended that between the two options, she preferred to eliminate the golden license. She said that weekly shellfish licenses also cost $20. “We’re going to have a hard time trying to explain why they’re going to pay $20 as a golden and a weekly license is $20,” she said.

“A lot of people come in just to get a golden license so they can take their grandkids,” said Rousseau.

“We should promote the taking of the grandkids,” said Harbormaster Steve Land.

At its April 16 meeting, the Shellfish Commission voted that the license should cost $10, but between the two choices the council proposed, the commission would prefer to eliminate the license.

The Town Council proposed that the golden license cost $20 instead of $1, even though the Shellfish Commission had previously recommended to the council that the license cost $10.

The council will address the proposed license change at a May 15 public hearing.

If the Golden Shellfishing License is eliminated, what option does that leave seniors to go clamming on occasion?  Would you be completely eliminating that license?  Or perhaps replacing it with the $20.00 weekly license which sounds absolutely outrageous to me?  Or possibly a more reasonable $5.00 to $10.00 season license where the seniors might enjoy the summer with their grand kids or even just themselves, shellfishing at leisure.  I can't see anyone with an ounce of sense paying $20.00!
