Schooner Rendezvous on Monday and Tuesday
This year’s Schooner Rendezvous will be held Aug. 26 and 27 at Payne’s Dock on the Great Salt Pond. Payne’s is at the very southern end of the Salt Pond.
The folks at Payne’s have once again extended a special rate of $2.50/foot for docking. Payment is made directly to Payne’s. If you prefer, anchoring out or picking up a mooring is always an option. You can dinghy-in for the festivities.
Contact Payne’s at (401) 466-5572 when you get into the Salt Pond. They will give you specific instructions for docking. If by chance you can’t reach anyone at Payne’s, tie up at the fuel dock.
Schedule of Events
Mystic Whaler will once again serve as flagship for the rendezvous events, and will be arriving Monday afternoon. The schedule is as follows:
Monday, Aug. 26
Schooners arrive at Payne’s (if you haven’t arrived early)
6 p.m.: Lobster Dinner aboard Mystic Whaler
8 p.m.: Sea shanty concert aboard Mystic Whaler with Geoff Kaufman.
9 p.m.: Shanty sing following concert. Bring your instruments and voices!
Tuesday, Aug. 27
Breakfast aboard Mystic Whaler
Schooners depart Payne’s (or stay longer, Block Island is a great place to hang around!)
Since the whole point of the rendezvous is to get schooners, passengers and crews together for a game, the rendezvous actually starts as soon as the second boat arrives! Last year several boats arrived Sunday evening and caught Walter McDonough performing at the Mahogany Shoals bar on Payne’s Dock. Walter is legendary on Block Island and well worth an early arrival.
For additional information, or if you are a charter schooner carrying paying passengers, please contact event organizer Paul Gray to discuss dinner and breakfast arrangements at firstname.lastname@example.org.
