School Scoop: Book fair and witches' magic

By Gloria S. Redlich | Oct 29, 2012

This week at the Block Island School, there’s a sense that the holidays are just around the corner. The library has been reconfigured for the annual Scholastic Book Fair, which ran all this week. The fair presented students, staff, parents and community members the chance to do their holiday book shopping early.

The spooky sounds of Halloween drift out into the first floor corridor from the cafeteria as a few of Carrie Todd’s students practice piano for the annual program “Witches’ Magic Piano,” which was just about to go on the road. Todd took the third and fourth grade and two fifth graders to the Scallop Shell Nursing Home in Wakefield to perform the holiday classic. The group also made a short field trip to the Pettaquamscutt Museum in South Kingston and then perform for the Matunuck Elementary School before returning to the island.

On October 30 at 8:30 a.m., the island pianists will present their talents before elementary students at their own school. This show will follow a short program on Halloween safety by a Block Island Police Department representative.
