Finn’s Seafood Restaurant, located right across from the ferry dock in Old Harbor, is a Block Island classic. Casual and friendly, Finn’s is a unique gathering place of people of all ages, locals and summer visitors, who have made this place a favorite stop for seafood for over 35 years. The choices are extensive — clams, oysters, shrimp, crabs, and all the popular kinds of fish. To quote owner Debbie Howarth, “It’s traditional New England seafood simply prepared.”

Recently a guest returned to Finn’s for his annual lobster dinner. “How do you make these lobsters taste so good every time?” he asked. “You’ve got to be doing something else. There must be a secret recipe.”

“They’re just good, fresh lobsters,” replied Howarth. “Cooked the way fish should be.”

Howarth, along with her husband Freddie and son Jason, have been serving lobster dinners for a long time. All their experience makes a big difference in the quality of food that comes to the table. There are the most popular steamed lobsters, ranging in size from culls (with one claw) up to 2-pounders. They can be served with butter and lemon, baked and stuffed, or as a complete lobster dinner with a choice of two sides. There’s lobster salad, too.

For the beef lovers, steak dinners and burgers are on the menu and, if you prefer some of each, then the Surf and Turf with a 6-ounce filet mignon and a 1 1/4 pound lobster is just for you.

Howarth said she has watched people come off the ferry, cross the parking lot and walk right into Finn’s. There’s seating for more than 100 people in the dining room and outside under the umbrellas or topside on the upper deck. There’s a seat for any kind of weather, and the views and people-watching are the best.

And don’t forget about the fried fisherman’s platters, fried clams and fish ‘n chips. “They’re very popular. We serve thousands,” said Howarth. — Becky Ballard
