The day of our visit to Dead Eye Dick’s, head chef Vincent Criscuola prepared his Tequila Lime Swordfish from the dinner menu. “Last year we tried this item several times as a special, and it would sell out immediately. Now, it’s permanently on our new menu,” said owner, Jessica Wronowski.

For this savory dish, chef Vincent rubs a fresh swordfish steak with coarse ground black pepper, sears it quickly and tops it with a tequila lime beurre blanc. It’s served with lobster mashed potatoes and fresh grilled asparagus. The entire presentation is as much a delight for the eye as the palate.

Jessica has a long history with Dead Eye’s, a Block Island landmark. Her grandfather, John H. Wronowski, was the first in the family to own it — “sometime in the 1980’s.” That was the era of swordfish, big steaks and plenty of lobsters. The restaurant has always been known for its good food and good fun. So many people, including Jessica’s grandparents, remember coming for dinner and then dancing to the music of Billy Stubbs.

Under Jessica’s management, Dead Eye’s still offers the same casual, fun atmosphere, a menu that balances the old with the new and all in a beautiful setting. The open view across the New Harbor takes in boats, water and sky along with a light sea breeze. She’s pleased that there’s still a loyal local crowd and many tourists that come back year after year.

Three other items to note: the lobster avocado BLT on the lunch menu is a must. And while you relax on the deck, try bartender Tosca Chirco’s Mango Pomegranate Mojito or a pitcher of white sangria paired with Dead Eye’s famous cheesy fries.
