Order this... Summery meals at Payne's Sunset Bistro

You’re thinking of a nice place for dinner? How about something with a wide-open view looking down across the New Harbor? All the glimmer of lights and stars at night? A choice of a deck or lawn brushed with a cooling breeze (or inside in inclement weather)? Out of the bustle of town, but just a walk from the harbor? Then the Sunset Bistro at Payne’s Harbor View Inn with plenty of choices of delicious, light, summery meals might be just the place for you tonight.

Everything from his own sushi to lobster, pizza with all combinations of toppings and big, fresh salads is prepared and served by Chef Larry Simonds. Originally from Venezuela, Simonds learned his craft working in several restaurants in Miami. It was at the Nobu Restaurant (owned by Robert DeNiro) where he was inspired to develop his own signature sushi creations.

Simonds introduced us to what is simply called “Lobster Roll” at the Sunset Bistro. When it was served, we realized this dish is anything but simple. In fact, the presentation is so lovely there was truly a moment (brief) of hesitation before we picked up the chopsticks.

The Lobster Roll includes a whole lobster tail. Half is served as a salad heaped in the tail, the other half is served in rolls of lobster (cooked with garlic butter and sake and chilled) with vegetables all in a soybean wrapper. Simonds drizzles the dish with very light aioli and spicy mayonnaise sauces, and serves it garnished with a delicate flower. It’s truly beautiful — to look at and to taste, and will make any moment a special occasion.

Payne’s Harbor View Inn has been open since 2009 and has ten comfortable guest rooms, as well as the restaurant.

Owner Carol Payne reminded us: the restaurant is BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle). You’ll need to plan to bring your favorite wine or beer which, for those from out-of-town, can be purchased at the Red Bird or the Block Island Grocery. Take-out is available at 466-5758.
