Max Balmforth, co-owner and manager of Club Soda, has a new baby, a very large baby. This one was custom-made in Virginia and towed all the way up to Block Island earlier this summer. It’s a smoker/cooker that can do almost everything. It even has its own spare tire. Stop by to see it on your travels around the island.

Club Soda has been known for years for its barbequed ribs and, recently, its pulled pork. As the orders increased, Max knew he needed to find a way to respond to the demand for more of his good food and added dinner items. His new smoker can do the job with everything from ribs to pork butt (for pulled pork), brisket and chicken. The savory, made-from-scratch sauces send it all right over the top.

For this story, Max served his smoked plate combo of BBQ baby back ribs and a spicy, tender pulled pork sandwich along with sides of cole slaw and baked beans. It’s for the hungry man (or woman) in all of us. There’s also a chicken and Andouille sausage gumbo on the menu that we want to order on the next visit.

Another advantage of Club Soda’s new smoker is that it can be towed to any site. Think of bringing all of this good food and service to your next family reunion, wedding or corporate gathering at any location.

Open year round, Club Soda has been a local favorite for many years. Its brochure describes the place accurately — “It has always been a place for folks to dance and gab all night long.” Whether it’s Trivia Monday, Karoke Tuesday or an open mike event, there’s always something fun happening, and with all the good food to go with it. — Becky Ballard
