Order This... Mexican on the Deck
For our visit to Mexican on the Deck, Manager Dan Cahill made sure he wore his big, glamorous sombrero. “It’s the real thing,” he said, “right from Mexico.” It really is a stunner. Of course Dan is too.
The location of this casual restaurant, located at McGovern’s Yellow Kittens, is just as impressive — activity and people-watching are available on one side (at the beginning of Corn Neck Road), and the beach and the sea on another. The Mexican on the Deck is just as advertised: an elevated, covered deck with 10 tables and a bar at one end. The breeze blows right through. It’s nice.
A specialty is the fish taco made with grilled haddock, pickled red onion, lettuce and cilantro. Chef Kelly Robinson adds Mexican spices to give the whole thing a little zing. Another taco choice is the ground beef or blackened chicken taco with all the toppings — cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa, guacamole and sour cream — served in a crispy or soft taco shell.
There are lots of Mexican-style appetizers including a lobster quesadilla. Entrées range from turkey, bacon and avocado wraps to clam-strip burritos. Any of them would be good with the Dos Equis amber draft beer, frozen mudslides or margaritas.
Chef Kelly first cooked in New Orleans, then started on Block Island at Winfield’s before she moved over to Mexican on the Deck. The place has grown since she arrived. It’s folks like our waiter Bill Sellar, there since 2009, who create a fun, friendly atmosphere for hungry people of all ages.
Mexican on the Deck is open daily for lunch, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Take-out and catering are available.
