We sat at Ernie’s and enjoyed poached eggs, hash browns, buttered toast and a hot cup of coffee while we talked to owners Betty Jean and Frank Nicastro about their popular breakfasts and this season’s specials. It’s all made in Frank’s classic style. “It’s nothing fancy, just what people like,” he said.

This year they’re featuring the “Early Bird Special” from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., which includes two eggs, any style, home fries, and your choice of toast for only $3.99. Frank said, “No one eats breakfast early any more, especially when they’re on vacation.” But if you’re the type who likes to get up and out, this good breakfast will give you the start-up to keep you moving all day long. Maybe the real advantage of an Early Bird at a place as well-known as Ernie’s is that there’s no waiting in line.

Other specials are the blueberry pancakes (two in a short stack, three in a tall stack) with maple syrup. Crisp bacon, savory sausage or ham is always available, too.

Omelets are a favorite for many people. This year the three-cheese (cheddar, Swiss and American) and Western (mushroom, cheese, ham, and vegetables) are big choices. Egg white omelets are available upon request.

Both breakfast and lunch sandwiches can be made “to go” if you’re in a hurry. Frank has packaged up a dozen or so for fishermen to take to their boats before they head out for the big catch.

And if you’re there early, stop by and say, “Hello” to the local Breakfast Club guys who meet at Ernie’s every morning all during the summer season for food, coffee and “island politics.” — Becky Ballard

Ernie’s is located on Water Street near the statue of Rebecca.
