Naked lobster roll at Ballard's

Another “must try” on Block Island this summer is the new “naked” lobster roll at Ballard’s Inn.  What makes it naked?  There’s no mayonnaise; it’s made with drawn butter instead. The dish consists of a huge helping of lobster (lots of big chunks of it), butter and seasoning on a bed of lettuce in a very big roll and served with your choice of french fries, onion rings or sweet potato fries.

Have a cold beer with this king-of-all lobster rolls or order from a long list of special drinks.  There’s also a large selection of martinis.  Some say the martini called “Fly Me to the Moon” is the best drink ever.

We spoke with Abdul Yousafzai, who has been at Ballard’s for six years and is the new manager.  In addition to his other culinary endeavors, he’s putting more emphasis on the dinners. We talked about the whole memorable experience: an evening beside the sea, music by John Brazile, a cool salty breeze, flaming tiki torches and a great, grilled swordfish dinner.  Other choice items on the full menu include sea scallops, a bone-in ribeye steak, and the ultimate surf and turf.

The service gets high ratings, too.  One guest told the staff, “Whatever you’re doing, keep it up. It’s great.”

Meals can be served anywhere guests choose.

“I think that’s one of the great things about Ballard’s.  You can eat and drink on the beach, the patio or inside,” Abdul said. “With this scenery, we let it do its own magic.”

There’s a kid’s menu, too.  Bring them for lunch, as there’s all sorts of food choices—pasta, chicken tenders, grilled cheese sandwiches, and more. Be sure they look for the giant skeleton of the baby blue whale floating up in the rafters of the main room. — Becky Ballard
