Monica Eileen (Long) Gunter, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2014 at the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley, Massachusetts.  She was 96 years old.

Born in Sheffield, England on March 24, 1918, Monica was the eldest of the five children of Samuel Long and Ellen (Collins) Long.  The family lived for many years in Coventry, England where Monica attended school and graduated from the Bars Hill School for Girls in 1936.  She was subsequently employed as a secretary at the McAlpine Corporation in Coventry until 1945.  She survived the devastation of Coventry by the Luftwaffe in November 1940, and in 1941 she was married to Ralph Joseph Gunter who was then serving in the British Army, Royal Engineers.

In 1951, after the birth of two children, Monica and her family emigrated to the United States and took up residence in Massachusetts, first in Brookline, and then after 1973 in Wellesley.  In 1968, Monica and Ralph purchased the Old Town Inn property on Block Island.  They restored the inn and operated the business until 2000.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brothers and sisters; Kathleen Heywood, Anthony Long, Margaret Charvat, and Henry Long.  She is survived by her four children: John Gunter and his wife Deborah of San Diego, California; Elizabeth Smith of Umatilla, Florida; Margaret Murphy and her husband Michael of Needham, Massachusetts; and Rev. David Gunter of Washington, D.C.  She also leaves six grandchildren; Jennifer Lindsey, Gary Smith, Amy Emkey, David Murphy, Marianne Steverman, and Matthew Murphy; and seven great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Monica will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 11a.m. in St. Paul Church, 502 Washington Street, Wellesley, Massachusetts.  She will be interred in the Island Cemetery, Block Island, R.I. at 12 noon on Thursday, July 10, 2014.

The family expresses their thanks to the staff of Elizabeth Seton Residence, who provided a caring environment for Monica during her final weeks of life.
