Meditative pianist composes songs for the audience
Mark Kelso, a pianist who has recorded 20 CDs and specializes in meditative music, will perform at Common Ground Coffeehouse at Harbor Church on Friday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. He will play his own compositions and arrangements of hymns and folk tunes, but will also create songs spontaneously based on suggestions from audience members.
Kelso recorded New Age instrumental music on the Narada label of Virgin Records, but formed his own label Muddy Angel in order to create music that did not shy away from religious overtones, nor cater to them. His most recent CD, “Grief and Grace,” is a collection of vocal songs reflecting on the experience of loss and comfort.
“Cathedral,” a CD which Kelso recorded in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, was praised by Dave Brubeck, George Winston, and Harold Arlen. Sir Ben Kingsley wrote Kelso saying “Your beautiful music wafts through my house.” Kelso has performed in venues ranging from Madison Square Garden and Neverland Ranch to small healing retreats and his own Congregational church in Richmond, Mass.
Admission to the concert in the Harbor Church sanctuary will be by donation. The coffeehouse will open at 6:30 p.m. with complimentary soup, coffee, and baked goods. The performance will be appropriate for all ages and all faiths.
