On March 15, Mary Donnelly will officially retire from her position as state nurse.

Retirement doesn’t mean that Donnelly will stop her work completely. She said she plans to continue to administer the Mary D. Fund, a private charity, and she will still volunteer around the island, including at the blood drive.

“I decided I had to do it.” Donnelly said about her retirement. “I listened to my grandchildren. It was a hard decision.”

Donnelly, 85, has been serving the island community as a nurse for more than 55 years. She has also garnered national attention for her charity work with the Mary D. Fund, which collects more than $50,000 a year to help island residents in need.
