Derek van Lent is a busy guy. He runs a successful landscape business, is a husband, father of two children and fills whatever spare time he has left with volunteer activities.

Derek is a director of Block Island Conservancy and, for the last seven years, the driving force behind the annual auto show that benefits the Block Island Early Learning Center.

Derek is a member of the Lions Club and has contributed his talents as a volunteer in the design of Ball O’Brien Park. He has served on the board of the Block Island Residents Association and spent a decade in the 1990s on the Deer Committee for the town. Derek was a member of the Historic District Commission serving as chair for a while.

He worked on the Recreation Committee of the Comprehensive Plan task force for the town.

Off island, Derek has been a director and vice chair of the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

You see Derek around town all the time with a friendly word and a smile. He’ll drop everything on a moment’s notice to lend a hand or chat about a new idea for downtown improvement.

Derek van Lent: a good guy who makes Block island a better place.
