To the Editor:

The Board of Directors of Scenic Block Island would like to thank the many members of the Block Island business community that supported our sale of reusable bags to benefit the rebuilding of The Spring Street Pump House and our other efforts to keep Block Island beautiful.

The design of this useful and beautiful memento of Block Island was aided by the kindness of Malcolm Greenaway, whose photographs provided such great meaning to this project, as well as the assistance of Martha Ball in organizing the effort.

Great thanks go to the Block Island Grocery, Glass Onion, Star Department Store, Block Island Hardware, Spring House, Historical Society, Beach Real Estate, Elevation Studio, Chamber of Commerce, Block Island Library, Pat Doyle and Matt OHare for enthusiastic support. Over $4,000 was raised!

Rebuilding The Pump House continues to be the priority for Scenic Block Island and we encourage all members of the community, as well as visitors to Block Island, to support it in any way you can.

To the Editor:

We artists at Spring Street Gallery could not believe the coverage you gave us in the Friday, Aug. 31 edition — and in color! We were all totally amazed and thrilled, and the turnout for our reception on that Sunday night can only be attributed to the article. We had so many new people walk in the door and so many people who said they had just learned about the Gallery, that we were all giddy.

You have always been kind to the artists on Block Island. You seem to make an extra effort, in fact, to print some kind of art related article every week and we artists are very grateful. We want to be an asset to the community and you are helping us to do that.

While I am saying thanks, I would like to thank the Trustees of the Harbor Baptist Church for their guidance and support of Spring Street Gallery. As our landlord, they are enthusiastic about supporting the Gallery and have contributed to the development of countless artists — many of whom have become able to earn a living doing their art — over the last 31 years.

It’s good to be an artist on Block Island!

To the Editor:

The article on the visit of U.S. Sen. [Jack] Reed and Rep. [Jim] Langevin to Block Island was very informative, but we were disappointed that their visit to the Island Free Library was not mentioned. Kristin Baumann, the Director, gave them an extensive tour of the facility, and they were very much engaged and interested in this island treasure.
