To the Editor:

This is Gabija Deksnyte, the girl who was hit by a car. On June 20, I was riding my bike from North Lighthouse to Old Harbor, when suddenly a car crossed yellow line and hit me. The woman didn’t stop and just kept going on the wrong side of the road. She told the police that she was distracted but I saw her face staring right at me. She also said that she thought that she hit a piece of wood and that scratches on her car bumper were old.

I’m just disappointed, because the article in your paper contained such a small amount of information. I thought that the name of the woman would be revealed, because it would be some kind of justice for me. People should know what kind of person lives among them.

Thank you for your attention. I just wanted to tell you that I’m not a piece of wood.

To the Editor:

The American Legion Auxiliary thanks everyone who contributed to the success of our Annual Yard Sale. It was a very successful event, thanks to all of you who donated items for us to sell, the volunteers who worked hard to make it happen, and especially those of you who came and found treasures to take home.

Our raffle was equally successful. We had many generous prizes to offer, donated by many of our Island restaurants and gift stores, the airline and the ferry, as well as some Island artists and individuals. To each of you, please know that we are grateful for your generosity.

I also want to acknowledge the debt of gratitude we owe our Block Island business community for the generous donations given each year on Memorial Day weekend when Maureen Hoyt, our Vice President, collects for our annual Poppy Fund Drive.

The money raised is used to support veteran charities and Veterans Administration hospitals, to provide our service people with phone cards and care packages, to support local food banks and Block Island charities, and to continue our scholarship for the Block Island School.

We couldn’t do all this without you.

God Bless America!

Rheba McKernan, President

American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 36 of Block Island
