To the Editor:

During the Department of Environmental Management presentation at the Block Island Residents Association Annual meeting last Saturday, a statement was made from the audience that the deer herd has been eliminated from Skidaway Island in Georgia. I have spoken to a person who is both a resident and a realtor at Skidaway and her statement was, “I will go on record that this is not accurate. There are deer on Skidaway.”

To the Editor:

I am very pleased to announce that the Third Annual Block Island Medical Center 5k Beach Run was again a great success. We had over 200 people participating in the event. As with other island fundraising events, it was successful due the contributions of many.

First, I’d like to thank the participants, which turned out to be a nice blend of year-round, partial year-round, vacationers and day-trippers. The second group I’d like to thank are the 20 sponsors who helped make the event a profitable one: Ballard Hall Real Estate, Phillips Real Estate, Attwood Real Estate, Sullivan Real Estate, Finn’s Restaurant, Dead Eye Dick’s Restaurant, The Oar Restaurant, Aldo’s Restaurant, Bethany’s Airport Dinner, The Beachead Restaurant, Ballard’s Restaurant, Diamond Blue Sports, Golddiggers Jewelers, Block Island Sports Shop, Mig’s Rig Taxi, A. Transue Corporation, Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Rhode Island, The National Hotel, Kettle Fusion Dynamics, and Island Hardware & Supply. I hope to see all of you again next year.

These events do not run themselves — there were many volunteers who contributed to the event by registering participants, distributing beverages and snacks, manning the water stops and helping with the logistics. I would like to thank Executive Director Barbara Baldwin (and her husband, Richard), and members of the Block Island Health Services Board (and their spouses) who volunteered their time and contributed to our success.

Thanks to all of you.

Race Director, Medical Center 5k Beach Run/Walk

To the Editor:

We would like to give special thanks to George Dodge for organizing the summer Blues on the Beach concerts. We attended all three of them this year, each with a unique and entertaining bands. It is truly one of the more enjoyable summer events on Block Island. To be on our beautiful beach, listening to fabulous music, surrounded by islanders and tourists of all ages is a wonderful way to relax after a busy summer day.

In addition to the work that George does to organize and bring the bands to the Island, thanks are also due to Kathy Szabo who works with many of the island establishments to find housing for the band. This year, rooms were donated by The Old Town Inn, Inn at Block Island, 1661, Gable’s, Champlin’s, Seacrest Inn, Gothic Inn, Block Island Accommodations, Darius Inn, Hygeia — and also to Interstate Navigation for transportation. Without their generosity, these concerts would not happen.

Thanks are also due to the Tourism Council, Block Island Residents Association, and Deepwater Wind for sponsoring the bands. Great entertainment, fabulous setting, pretty sunsets and all free!
