Kyle Draper's send-off, two new kids and other island happenings
A get-together was hosted by the Abrams and Draper families for Kyle Draper and his many friends last Friday at McGovern’s Yellow Kittens, following Clam Shack. All were there to give Kyle a warm send-off before his departure, last Tuesday, for his six-month tour of duty in Iraq. Just before the flight to Iraq from Green Airport, Kyle and others who were deploying were honored at an early morning service at Quonset Point.

Two new kids, and we do mean baby goats, are now residents at John Willis’s Beacon Hollow Farm. The two, named by Cailin Buffenmeyer for the constellations Pegasus and Pyxis (Peg and Pyx for short), were born in an open field at the Abrams Animal Farm during the island’s cold snap last winter: Pegasus on January 31 and Pyxis on February 1. The kids and their mothers were rescued from exposure to freezing winds and icy ground by Heather Sniffen.

In the last two weeks, Block Island has lost three people who contributed generously and immeasurably, each in his or her own way, to this island and this community. The three are Elise Lapham, Weld Coxe and Gil Plumb, and all will be sorely missed.
On the date of this paper, some of us will be traveling to nearby Essex, Conn., for a memorial service and celebration of the life of Gil Plumb. Your columnist and her husband were introduced to one another by Gil in November 1986, and in addition to that history making event, we have memories of many happy times with Gil and his family.
As noted in the obituaries in this paper, services for Elise, Weld and Gil will be held on Block Island starting in May, so that friends here may honor and celebrate their lives among us. Dates and times will be announced in this newspaper as they become known.
Let us know what’s happening! Visiting relatives, special occasions, updates on friends near and far, projects… Deadline is Tuesday morning, and Fran can be reached at 466-2892 or firstname.lastname@example.org
