Kristine Monje named new principal
The School Committee approved island resident Kristine Monje as the new principal at the Block Island School.
Monje was selected out of a list of about 50 candidates, said School Superintendent Bob Hicks.
“The candidates that we interviewed were very impressive people,” said Hicks, who also served on the search committee for the position.
“I am recommending Kristine Monje to that position,” said Hicks. “Even with all that competition, she [Monje] stood out.”
In February, the School Committee approved a reorganization of the school administration. The administration will be comprised of a full-time principal, a part-time principal and a superintendent. Currently, there is a superintendent and two part-time principals.
Bob Hicks will remain as the superintendent. The committee has not yet hired the part-time principal.
Monje was a fourth grade teacher for many years, and for the past year was on sabbatical to obtain her principal’s license.
