Island mopeds now using synthetic oil
Block Island’s moped companies have switched to a new fuel that is more environmentally-friendly in order to comply with an agreement they have with the Town of New Shoreham.
Company MJ Transportation, which manages five moped rental locations on Block Island, agreed to use to what is called “G-OIL,” a biodegradable engine oil, for all the mopeds on the island. This oil is manufactured by a company called Green Earth Technologies.
It is “designed to protect the environment from smoke and harmful emissions,” according to a press release issued by Green Earth Technologies. The oil does not contain fossil fuels (like petroleum), but instead contains biodegradable, natural resources such as pine oil.
“I think we found the perfect solution with G-OIL. It’s the most environmentally-friendly synthetic oil available on the market today. Less emission is better for riders, better for our mopeds and better for Block Island. This is the right direction to take,” said John Leone, owner of Old Island Bike Shop, in a press release issued by Green Earth Technologies.
The switch was made in response to an agreement island moped companies had reached with the Town of New Shoreham, which required them to switch to the synthetic oil for the 2013 season. They have done just that.
Last August, the Town Council and Block Island’s moped rental companies renewed a five-year settlement agreement, which was originally signed in 1997. The agreement touches upon what kind of jurisdiction the town has over these companies. One thing that the moped owners agreed upon was the switch to synthetic, in an effort to address concerns about pollution raised by Town Councilors.
“I recognize the town is continually trying to strike that sometimes-difficult balance between tourism, its obvious economic importance to the island and its business owners, and the environmental impact it [tourism] can have,” said Greg Wertz, who works as an investor and advocate of Green Earth. Wertz is the Managing Director of a company called Pioneer Capital Management Inc. “I hope this helps some in ultimately achieving that balance.”
