Island adventures at the end of the yearBrought to you by the Senior Advisory Committee
Okay, I am embarrassed to say that I am the winner of the "Get a Movin' and a Groovin" Contest." Well, the point of the contest was to get everyone moving — so for all of you who started to exercise or increased the amount of exercise you are already doing — applause and congratulations to you! You are already ahead of your New Year's resolution!
And to start off the New Year, we are offering even more programs for you:
Friday, January 4:
Chair Aerobics: Now by popular demand, Robin is offering two days a week at the Community Center at 10:30 a.m. Cost $3
Soup Group: Catch up with your friends after the holidays and let somebody serve you some sensational soup, at the Community Center at 12:30 p.m. Cost $4
Saturday, January 5:
Coffee, Tea of Smoothie Social: Once again, on the first Saturday of the month we are offering you a chance to try something new for your morning routine or a chance to visit!
Pinch a Pot: Our cooking classes and arts and crafts classes have been a big hit. On Wednesday January 9, we will be offering you the first of two parts of a pottery session. In the first class Becca Hollaway will teach us how to create a pinch pot and in the second session (January 23) we will glaze them. Then Becca will fire them for us. Please call to sign up in advance (466-7712) as we can only offer this program to 12 participants.
Yummy in your tummy: We are starting up a new program that will provide some seniors with hot meals delivered to their home on Mondays and/or Thursdays. We have a generous, anonymous donor who is going to offset the cost, so each meal is only $5. The Block Island Grocery will be making the meals. We will request 24 hours' notice when ordering. Please call Betsey DeMaggio at 466-2339 with orders, any questions, concerns or possible food allergies.
Mix and Match: We are creating more programs that mix and match the different age groups. We have been invited to share priceless moments with the preschool children at the Block Island Early Learning Center. To participate in this program you will need to call Tracy Heinz, ahead of time, at 575-8550. Perhaps you would like to read a book or bake cookies with the children, but if you're not sure, Tracy will have ideas for you. Your heart will sing after spending time with these adorable children.
Also, back by popular demand, we will have our high school students meet us again at the library to help us with Facebook or other computer related questions. These teenagers are whiz kids and you will be delighted to get to know them. They are ready and willing!
Also, don’t forget to attend all of the wonderful activities that we are invited to at the Block Island School. Watching our children grow up is so rewarding.
Share Pair: If you are that special someone that is willing to give an hour of your time or talent please give us a jingle. If you are that special someone that could use a simple smile, a friendly face or a helping hand, just let us know. Would you like to run errands for someone? Do you have time to share a cup of tea? Do you need your prescriptions picked up? Do you have a closet that needs cleaning, or do you love to cook and live alone? Let’s make a pair and share! See how good it feels! How many times do you say hello to someone and never really get the chance to know them? Call me or email me and let me know: Would you love to give, or get, a hand?
Count on it Calendar: I don’t know about you but I get so confused looking at all the different calendars in all the different places, so let make it easy for us folks and put it all together in one place. That way, more of us can support each other, with all the wonderful events that are being hosted for us here all over the island. We are working on having both a calendar on the computer, and a paper version posted in various places.
Are you interested and eligible?
Navigating through the complex rules and paperwork necessary to access senior services can be confusing and downright overwhelming. That is why we would like to give you a hand and introduce you to the South County Community Action Agency. Their goal is to open the doors and guide seniors towards the many programs that will improve their health, well-being, and quality of life.
Would you like to have some support: Understanding the Affordable Care Act, and the benefits to you? Understanding the changes in the Medicare system? Organizing your own personal medical care? Would you like any pharmacy assistance? Would you like to know more about a Senior Health Insurance Program? Would Food Stamps be helpful for you? Are you in need of financial counseling? Would you like someone to help you prepare your taxes for free? Would you like to have your appliances repaired or replaced? Do you need a new boiler or repair on your existing boiler? Would you like to learn more if you home could be weatherized in spots to stay warmer? Do you qualify for emergency funding for heat, electric, prescription and other needs? Are you in need of furniture perhaps? To see if you are eligible, you may call us, or call the SCCAA yourself at 789-3061.
Sexercise: Okay, would you have read it if it said exercise? Probably not! We have increased your exercise options so there is something for everyone and something each day of the week. In addition to what we are hosting, there are many other exercise options for you here on the island at various times and places. Find the ones that you enjoy most. Walking is always wonderful. It’s free, and it can be done anytime. Start with just five minutes! Remember if you are alive and kicking, it is never too late to exercise and when you do it with a friend, it’s way more fun!
Thank you and you and you: The Senior Advisory Committee wishes to thank the individuals and groups that have made a commitment to our community to support both the Lunch Bunch and the Soup Group to keep the programs ongoing, enjoyable and delicious. We also wish to thank all of the talented and brave souls who have been our leaders, our experts, our teachers, our singers and even our sous chefs for our programs. Thank you, thank you and thank you, for making our activities so enjoyable!
