Hurricane Sandy hits Block Island
Tuesday, October 30 8:00 a.m. On a calm morning with little winds and clear skies, the Providence Journal reports that Hurricane Sandy inflicted what may be heavy damage to the newly-built dock at Old Harbor Drive Monday. Monday, October 29 8:00 p.m. With some areas on Block Island out of power and the water in Old Harbor already even with the top of the breakwall, Block Island gears for high tide around 8 p.m., around the same time Sandy makes landfall with Jersey, about 5 miles southwest of Atlantic City, reports the National Hurricane Center.
However, Governor Chafee and other state officials said they expect the worst of Hurricane Sandy's impacts to pass Rhode Island by 10 or 11 p.m. Monday, reported the Providence Journal.
Monday, October 29 7:00 p.m. According to the National Hurricane Center, Sandy's center is expected to make landfall in New Jersey within the next hour or so. The hurricane has now been designated a "post-tropical cyclone" and its max winds are now near 85 MPH.

Monday, October 29 3:30 p.m. According to WPRI, at 3 p.m. Hurricane Sandy was a Category 1 storm, with top sustained winds of 90 mph, and has picked up speed. It's expected to make landfall on the coast of Southern New Jersey or Central Delaware between 6 and 8 p.m. Block Island will feel its most severe effects through 9 p.m.
Already, the wind has picked up speed and power has been flickering on and off throughout town.
Monday, October 29 12:00 p.m. Due to Hurricane Sandy, school will be closed today. There will be no ferry service until further notice; BIHS has cancelled its Monday afternoon meeting. Both the town hall and the bank are closed as of noon.
