High-speed Newport ferry starts June 29

Welcome aboard the Islander
By Stephanie Turaj | Jun 24, 2013

This summer, it will be easier to travel between two of the arguably most beautiful places in New England.

The Islander, a high-speed ferry, starts running between Block Island and Newport on June 29, and will continue until Sept. 2. Each regularly scheduled trip will take about an hour, half the time of last year’s Newport service aboard the Nelseco — which the Islander has completely replaced.

With several trips each day, it will be possible for islanders to take a day trip to Newport, and easier for East Bay residents, as well as people from South Shore of Massachusetts, to spend a day on Block Island.

The service costs $50.50 round-trip and $25.50 for a one-way trip. It departs Block Island twice daily, once at 10:30 a.m. and again at 5:05 p.m. It will leave Newport three times daily: 9 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

The ferry cruises at a speed of 27 knots through the Block Island Sound. On a trip to Newport, the views include Beavertail Lighthouse near Jamestown, R.I., the Rose Island Lighthouse, Conanicut Island and eventually Newport Harbor.

In each town, the ferry docks in the main street sections and near the visitor centers: in Old Harbor on Block Island and in Perotti Park in downtown Newport.
