May 14, 2013

The Senior Advisory Committee is excited to offer island residents an alternative healing workshop on Friday, May 17 at the Community Center from 4 to 6 p.m. The workshop will feature a talented guest panel of professionals, alternative ways of healing, some yummy nibbles and a chance to win a drawing for a $50 gift certificate towards an appointment with the therapist of your choice.

Each therapist will take turns giving a brief talk and/or demonstration of their specialty and then we will have some time for Q & A, and pick the winner of the drawing. We will start in promptly at 4 p.m. with our panel, but please feel free to join us at anytime.

Anna Christina is both a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Herbalist. Eileen Miller, MFA, is a certified practitioner of Energy Healing. She has completed eight years of training at two different schools: the Barbara Brennan School of Healing in Fla. and Integrated Kabbalistic Healing in N.J. Energy Healing is similar to reiki in that it uses the electromagnetic energy of the body and earth to assist in the holistic healing of the body, mind, and spirit. There are many different techniques that elicit relaxation and balancing of the different systems of the body and treat imbalances, injuries, and disease.

Crystal Hauser is a Licensed Massage Therapist and has been been working in both Block Island and Snug Harbor. Crystal sees her primary role as educating her patients about their muscular system. Crystal spends time teaching them not only their anatomy, but how to take care of their bodies, especially during the aging process. There are many beneficial health benefits to regular massage therapy.

Paul Cunningham wears many hats on Block Island. He is a massage therapist, herbalist, stone wall builder, basketball coach, and freelance writer. Paul is the owner of Center for Integrated Healing, where he specialized in the form of massage known as Shiatsu. Shiatsu is a traditional Japanese, hands on healing art, that works along the same meridians as acupuncture, but instead Paul applies light pressure with his fingers and palm and also incorporates stretches into his therapy.

Persephone Brown is a Certified Health Coach, with certification from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and is a graduate of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and Columbia Teachers College of New York City. Spending a number of years cooking for herself (as a vegan, vegetarian, and now carnivore) and as the baker for the Juice and Java Cafe, she learned the art of making healthy beautiful food that tastes good and warms your core. Persephone uses her education and experience with food, to support women to clear the static and get really clear on what works for them. She has guided hundreds of whole food cleanses, teaching people to take that first step for their health and their life.
