Groundhog tally: 1,006
Block Island's population grew from last year's, according to the island's unofficial census on Groundhog Day.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, February 2, the count was announced to be 1,006, up from last year's 948, and the highest population in years. The numbers usually hover in the mid-900s, although in 2010 they hit 1,001.
The count covers anyone physically on island that night, whether they are an island resident or not, and doesn't count any residents who are away. A packed crowd filled Old Island Pub for the census celebrations.
