Flu shots available at Medical Center

Guard against bad flu going around
Jan 14, 2013

There is a flu epidemic afoot, and we at the Block Island Medical Center are concerned with both the number of patients we are seeing, and also the severity of their symptoms. We are also hearing of a large number of people being hospitalized on the mainland with a related pneumonia, sometimes staphylococcal. We want you to be prepared.

The best prevention is a flu shot. This year’s vaccine is a very good match for the virus responsible for most cases. The “flu” is a viral illness, not always easy to distinguish from a cold or other flu-like illnesses.

The important influenza symptoms:

Fever and chills — take your temperature

Muscle and body aches, described by some as like being hit by a truck

Headache, severe

A dry cough, which may or may not be associated with a runny nose

Vomiting and/or diarrhea

If you have these symptoms, and are early in the course of the illness, you may benefit from an antiviral medication, tamiflu, so we encourage you to come in and see us.

We strongly recommend that virtually everyone get the flu vaccine. It does not cause the flu, and it is effective, preventing or minimizing the symptoms. Further, patients who are immunized will not carry the disease to others at home or in the community. We have the vaccine. Call us at 466-2974 and come in and get the vaccine if you have not done so already.
