Featured Letter: Join the B.I. Historical Society
To the Editor:
We welcome the coming summer season with our Opening Reception on Saturday, June 22 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Historical Society on Old Town Road. We will be pleased to have you view the extensive renovations to the building that have been completed by carpenter John Littlefield and painter Gayeanne Hall. The renovations include a newly installed wall and floors to the main building’s north east room, newly patched and painted second floor exhibit room and the start of the front porch restoration.
This work was funded by the Champlin Foundation and the Elizabeth Ann Evans Estate. The first phase of the window restoration and painting project began last summer, which was funded in part by a grant from the 1772 Foundation and Preserve Rhode Island. We re-glazed and painted over half of the windows, completed the installation of four custom storm windows and are in the process of re-painting the entire building. We still have much more to do. We will be having a summer fundraiser to launch the next phase of this important maintenance project. Our goal is to raise $25,000 toward the window/painting project. We are also hoping to install an automatic sprinkler system estimated to cost $55,000.
We look forward to introducing you to the many new programs, guided tours and events this coming year. Our special summer exhibit is entitled: “Pirates, Shipwrecks & Tales of the Sea.” We are also continuing to show, and sell in the gallery, the original oil paintings of the late C. Sperry Andrews, depicting favorite views of old Block Island.
We hope you will consider joining the membership of the Historical Society this summer so that we can continue to preserve the history of our beautiful and special island.
