Editorial: A Taste of Block Island begins Friday
Do you have your button yet?
That is, have you paid your five dollars for the button that will gain you access to all the events happening this weekend during A Taste of Block Island? The button can be purchased on the ferry or at the Block Island Chamber of Commerce, and along with it comes a brochure that is astonishing in the breadth of activities available to you.
This is an event that should not be enjoyed just by visitors alone. If you’re an island resident — whether year-round or not — you’ve probably driven or walked by a restaurant or business and said to yourself “I should go in there someday.” Now is your chance.
From 15 percent off fresh bakery items at Aldo’s Bakery, to a special deal at the Spring House to free toppings on a pizza at Papa’s Pizza — your button will give you a taste of what is happening beginning Friday, May 31 through June 2.
The name “A Taste of Block Island” is, just to be fair, a little misleading because there is more than just food involved. There’s price reductions at B.I.T.’s and at the Block Island Health & General Store and at Diamondblue, among many, many other places.
The choices one has during this three day festival is truly staggering, and sometimes too much choice can be a little daunting. But all you have to do is walk around town, drift in and out of the stores and restaurants and hotels at your leisure, and remind yourself that the island is a remarkably diverse and bustling place.
So, if you haven’t picked up your button yet, do so right away and enjoy.
Plus, the weather is supposed to be gorgeous.
