Edgewood Armadillos Elite are this year’s Kings
The Kings of the Block Basketball Tournament was a success yet again.
On Monday Aug. 12 at 1 p.m., 21 teams lined up to register for the second annual event. This year’s tournament was run by Oliver Mott and raised $1,000 for the Block Island Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to the 21 teams of three players each, more than 50 spectators came out to watch the games. Fans and players alike helped the cause by buying burgers and tank tops, and by making donations.
Teams consisted of island workers, year-rounders, summer residents, weekly renters, and day trippers, and ages of participants ranged from 10 to 63.
The tournament ran smoothly, despite a light rain that delayed the start of the second round by half an hour. But once referee Mark Mollicone cleared the courts of water and deemed the conditions safe for basketball, the tournament resumed. The chefs also fought their way through a scalding hot grill — the result of too much instant light charcoal — that charred the early round of burgers.
This years winners were Tommy Chase, Gus Culpo, and Tom Horvat of the Edgewood Armadillos Elite from Edgewood, Rhode Island. They defeated last year’s champions: Mike Marsocci, Marko Jankovic, and Rich Charpentier of Aldo’s Holy Grail, 11-9, in an exciting final game. The Armadillos received the $300 grand prize, and Team Aldo’s received a $100 gift certificate to the Block Island Sport Shop.
The event committee, in addition to Oliver Mott, included Aaron Monieson, Ryan McGarry, Wyatt Lillie, Orrin Starr, Alex White, Allie Littlefield, Griffen Hall and Sam Barrett-Cotter.
The committee would like to thank sponsors Ballard Hall Real Estate, The Block Island Sport Shop, The Block Island Times, the Poor People’s Pub, Aldo’s, the Beachead Restaurant, the Mohegan Café, The Post Office Bagel Shop, Mig’s Rig Taxi, The Block Island Depot and the Old Island Pub. The Committee would also like to thank Rob Closter, Shirlyne Gobern, Nancy Dodge, Tristan Payne, Gail Hall, Russell Littlefield and everyone who came out to play and support the teams.
