Council to meet with Interstate NavigationMonday, Dec. 16
The Town Council and ferry company Interstate Navigation will discuss several issues regarding ferry service at a meeting scheduled for next week.
The meeting will be held on Monday, Dec. 16, at Town Hall. According to the agenda, “The New Shoreham Town Council will meet with Interstate Navigation to discuss issues of mutual concern.” The meeting begins at 12:15 p.m.
First Warden Kim Gaffett said there will be a “discussion on general service issues.”
She said to expect a discussion about the boat schedule, an update on Interstate’s new service from Fall River, and updates on maintenance being performed on Interstate’s vessel M.V. Block Island.
Councilor Norris Pike also agreed that addressing the boat schedule is his main concern.
“That would be my primary objective, to have better winter service,” said Pike. “It’s kind of a ‘catch-22.’ We can’t have a better year-round economy until we have better year-round transportation. But I think they’re [Interstate] reluctant because we don’t have a lot of people coming over in the winter.”
Gaffett said she has no specific concerns to ask of Interstate: “We try to keep the meeting open as a communication vehicle.”
