A sticker illegally posted on a stop sign in Bridgegate Square has the New Shoreham Police concerned.

The sign, at the intersection of Old Town Road and Dodge Street, was changed to read: “Stop...talking to cops.”

Police Chief Vincent Carlone said this message is directly going against the police department’s recent work to reduce on-island substance abuse and risk-taking behavior.

“That’s a serious attempt to thwart what we’re trying to do to protect the children,” said Carlone. “We need people to tell us if they see something suspicious.”

Carlone said that “anyone that would take the time to do that is seriously concerned about what will happen if people do tell us as far as drugs go.”

He said the police are trying to protect the island.

In referencing the vandals, Carlone asked “What are they trying to protect?”
