Blockisland.com has a rebirth

By The Block Island Times | Jan 03, 2014

This week, the publishers of The Block Island Times are launching a newly updated and redesigned website, www.blockisland.com that will highlight the recreational aspects of the island, according to publisher Fraser Lang.

“Visitors to the website and to the island can expect the most comprehensive site designed for visitors to Block Island available,” Lang said. “We’ll have features about how to find accommodations, nature walks, ferry and plane schedules, dining out and more.”

Content from the popular Block Island Summer Times will be featured for the first time in a digital format so that island visitors “can get a deeper sense of what is available for recreation on the island,” said Lang. The content of the site will be updated regularly. As an example, there’s video of this year’s Polar Plunge, which took place on New Year’s Day. There is also a link to a live web cam with views from The Spring House and a listing of all the advertisers on the site, as well as links to their own websites, and a dining guide.

The website blockisland.com has been live for years, but has not been updated for some time. It was originally launched by islander Henry DuPont, who developed it about 20 years ago when online content was relatively new. “He looked at it as being the main online focal point for the island,” said Lang. “But over the years the content was not kept current and so we approached them with the idea of overhauling it and he was very much in favor of that.”

There are other websites promoting the island as a tourist destination, most notably the websites run by the Block Island Chamber of Commerce and the Block Island Tourism Council, Lang said that blockisland.com will be working in concert with those two sites. “Those websites do a very good job executing the mission of these organizations and we have no intention of duplicating that,” said Lang. “Our goal is to bring visitors to the island and to show the island for what it is, a beautiful place to vacation, whether it’s for a day, a week or the entire summer.”
