Block Island pianists earn medals at Ratings Fest
A group of 20 young island pianists and one clarinetist attended the annual Rhode Island Solo and Ensemble Ratings Festival at Rhode Island College on Saturday, May 11. This festival, attended by more than 2,300 students from across the state, offers students an opportunity to perform a composition they have memorized and be evaluated on areas such as tone, rhythm, technique, interpretation, and presentation.
“Our musicians were well prepared and very impressive,” said Block Island piano teacher Carrie Todd. The group all received medals, coming away with 12 A ratings and nine B ratings — well above the average. “Congratulations are well deserved for their dedication and practice,” said Todd, who wants the community to know they all will have a chance to hear these kids perform at the Spring Recital later this month.
This year’s Spring Piano Recital takes place Wednesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Parish Center.
