Block Island Medical Center Focuses on Finding a New Doctor
during Its 25th Anniversary Year
Block Island Medical Center, a Rhode Island licensed ambulatory care facility, which opened in 1989, provides a waiting room, physician’s office, three exam rooms, an emergency care room, a laboratory and an x-ray suite for patient examinations and care.
Additional office space is provided for a dentist and orthodontist and for visiting specialists in acupuncture, chiropractics, massage therapy, podiatry, and psychotherapy.
The Block Island Medical Center is the sole provider of medical care on Block Island. Currently staffed by a board-certified family practitioner, a board-certified nurse practitioner, and a registered nurse, the Medical Center offers primary and urgent care for patients of all ages.
The Medical Center and Block Island Rescue Squad, in conjunction with Interstate Navigation (the ferry company), New England Airlines, and regional helicopter ambulance services, arrange for and provide emergency medical transport to mainland hospitals, when critical care is needed.
The patient load varies from day to day. During the off-season, September – May, the physician sees about ten patients a day. During June, July, and August, the doctor often sees more than thirty patients a day. The doctor precepts medical students and residents from the Brown University Medical School during the summer, and these students assist with patient care, under the doctor’s direct supervision.
In general, doctors who have practiced at the Medical Center enjoy the pace of the off-season practice when they can spend quality time with patients.
Often, a physician will get to know several generations of a family, and the kind of patient-physician rapport that is lacking elsewhere can be found in this practice.
Many also like the variety of medical cases and the intensity of the summer practice.
The Medical Center maintains strong relationships with mainland hospitals, collaborating with them to provide optimum patient care.
The practice serves a resort, island community. The need for emergent medical response can interrupt office schedules, and after-hours calls are unpredictable. Lyme disease is an on-going medical issue. (A twenty-year study with Yale’s Peter Krause, M.D., continues and may be of interest to research-oriented physicians.) The ideal physician for the practice would be a family practice doctor with ER/urgent care experience, who is skillful, resilient, resourceful, and able to work effectively in a challenging environment, utilizing the limited human and technological resources available on-island.
The Block Island Medical Center is managed by an administrator and the board of directors of Block Island Health Services, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
BIHS provides staff for billing and collections.
The Town of New Shoreham (Block Island)
http://www.new-shoreham.com/index.cfm provides financial support for the Block Island Medical Center, as do a variety of donors and non-profit organizations.
