BIRA's Dune Restoration Project Defines Beach Access Paths

By Block Island Residents Association | Jun 17, 2013

June 8th was the third community workday of BIRA's Dune Restoration Project, and, despite the stormy weather of earlier that morning, about a dozen hardy souls stepped up and installed snow fencing to delineate access points to Mansion Beach. Since the start of the project, beach access paths have been installed at Baby Beach, Town Beach and Mansion Beach.  The Town is deliberating how to handle access to Scotch Beach, which is currently very wide.  We want to thank the over 150 community workers who've participated in this project, dug 450 post holes, and put up 90 rolls of fence; that’s just under a mile of snow fencing.  Once the wind blows the sand up against the new fencing, we'll plant either beach grass, if available, or beach rose plants to keep the dunes where they need to be.  The Conservation Commission is designing small signs, at BIRA expense, reminding everyone to stay off the dunes, which serve as a vital barrier keeping the sea away from our homes and businesses.  Thanks also go out to all of the donors to this project! If you haven't yet joined BIRA, you may do so at our website:   http://bira02807.org/products-page/ .  We very much need and appreciate all of our memberships, which go towards our Work Plan:  http://bira02807.org/initiatives/.  We hope to see you at the House and Garden Show, where Exede will be talking with residents about improving telecommunications.
