BIHS meeting cancelled
A meeting called for May 14 by the Membership Committee of Block Island Health Services (BIHS) was cancelled when chair Kay Lewis said that a public notice announcing the meeting had not been posted 48 hours in advance, as is required by law.
The meeting had been scheduled in response to requests by some candidates who are running for the BIHS board, and members of the board itself, for the membership lists to be made available to them. “Since the agenda didn’t get posted, we cannot hold the meeting,” said Lewis to the small audience that had gathered for the meeting.
In addition to Lewis, committee members present were Bruce Johnson and Bill McCombe. As a board candidate, Cindy Baute had recused herself and Harriet Davidson was not available.
Though unable to have a formal meeting, there was some discussion, and McCombe suggested that the committee wait to reschedule until after a new board was seated. There are six candidates running for three open seats on the BIHS board: incumbents Cindy Baute and Pete Tweedy, as well as Ken Maxwell, Bruce Montgomery, Albert Casazza and Peter Saxon. Ballots have been sent to dues-paying members of Block Island Health Services, and will be made public at the annual meeting on June 9.
