B.I. Hurricanes tie Oxford

By Kathleen Hemingway | Oct 09, 2013

This week’s game started off quickly, with a goal by Oxford a little after the one minute mark, but just minutes into the game it was clear that coach John Breunig and the referee did not exchange Christmas cards. Nevertheless, the ‘Canes did not sacrifice their sportsmanship or intensity during the game.

While it took a while, the Hurricanes finally got on the board at the 17-minute mark thanks to Mason Littlefield’s goal off of a penalty kick. Shortly after, Ryan McGarry was able to secure the lead for Block Island with another goal, this time it was off of a corner kick and was actually headed in by Oxford’s goalie.

Unfortunately, a little before the 30-minute mark, Oxford scored another goal and then another one five minutes later to take the lead from us by one. Back and forth the two teams went, evenly matched and both wanting win.

Thankfully, just five minutes before half time a tremendous team effort was put in by the Hurricanes to score once more. Thanks to the skillful chest bump by Delaney Schwarzer and an assist from Ryan McGarry, Mason Littlefield was able to score another goal for the Hurricanes.

By the next half, the ‘Canes really stepped it up defensively. It truly became a team sport at that point. Tadhg O’Neill had some tremendous saves and Kiley Hall put forth a good defensive end.

Unfortunately, no goals were scored in the second half by either team, although there were some extremely close calls made by Mason Littlefield and Ryan McGarry.

Block Island ended up leaving the field with a tie of 3-3 and with the hope that they'll win the next time they face Oxford Academy, which just happens to be this Friday at Heinz Field at 1 p.m.

Come support the ‘Canes as they battle for a win!
